Dr. Hà Văn Võ



Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering |

Mercer University

A native of South Vietnam and survivor of the Vietnam War, Dr. Hà Văn Võ came to Mercer University in February of 2005 to pursue his dream in designing prosthetic legs and hands to help impoverish amputees in Vietnam and third world countries. Achieving his M.D. and D.P.M. at Barry University and Hope Medical College, he started to move away from clinical practice to earn his Ph.D. from Florida Atlantic University and entered the academic and research fields. He is the founder of Mercer on Mission Vietnam, and under his leadership, the program has gone on to fit over 13,000 amputees and treat over 52,000 orthopedic and medical patients in Vietnam and Cambodia.

Dr. Richard K. Kunz

Retired Professor of Mechanical Engineering | Mercer University

A retired professor of Mechanical Engineering at Mercer University, Dr. Richard K. Kunz has decades of experience in both teaching and his respective field. Earning his M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, he taught at Mercer for 12 years. He has been involved in Mercer on Mission Vietnam prior to and even after his retirement, working with Dr. Hà Văn Võ and Dr. Edward M. O’Brien to train the incoming student participants in the program and fit patients once in the country.

Dr. Craig T. McMahan



Assistant Professor of Religion and University Minister |

Mercer University

An American Baptist who has served in churches in Ohio, Kentucky, Alabama, and North Carolina, Dr. Craig T. McMahan came to Mercer University in 2005. Having earned his M.Div. and Ph.D from The Southern Baptist Seminary, he currently teaches as part of the Roberts Department of Christianity at Mercer, but he continues to pursue cultural endeavors and opportunities for the advancement of the intellect and of faith. He has diligently served the Mercer on Mission Vietnam program since its inception in 2009, and he has since partnered with Dr. Hà Văn Võ and the rest of the team to develop and fit the transradial prosthesis.

Dr. Edward M. O’Brien

Department Chair and Professor of Biomedical Engineering | Mercer University


A professor at Mercer University since 1990, Dr. Edward M. O’Brien has taught in the Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Engineering Departments. He earned both his M.S. and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at Iowa State University and has been actively engaged in Mercer on Mission since 2011. Working closely with Dr. Hà Văn Võ, his focus has been on the fitting of Vietnamese amputees as well as the training and personal development of the students that participate in the trips.
